Altitude sickness?
I would love to go to Peru, but know from historic experiences that I suffer from altitude sickness. In my thirties, for example, it took me 48 hours to acclimatise to Mexico City.
I'd love to know:
Given that I have large blood pressure now, is going up to glorious altitude a good opinion?
Do Amlodipine and/or Ramipril help? I know Nifedipine does, but I am not on this medication.
Does anyone know a right company that organises staged travel so one can acclimatise? Or is this just out of the question, given the terrain and where the sights are? I'm starting from the UK and own 2-3 weeks.
I be grateful for your sustain.
Answers: You have a impressively good query. Everyone knows that acetazolimide and nifedipine can back prevent but actually dexamethasone, phosphodiesterase inhibitors, (like viagra) and salmeterol enjoy all demonstrated benefit within randomized trials to help prevent sickness. Neither amlodipine nor ramipril hold any role in decreasing your likelihood of getting high alt. sick. You should in need a doubt continue your current medication and realize that beside hypertension and a previous episode of AMS (acute mountain sickness) your chances are around 75% of getting it again, please hold proper precaution; slow ascent, hydration, rest, and even the slightest signs or symptoms should warrant immediate descent and treatment.

When we've traveled to large altitude areas like the Himalayas or the Andes, we've taken Diamox (Acetazolamide). It's a prescription that help prevent altitude sickness and actually is used to treat it. Don't know nearly the high blood pressure issue. you should check near your doctor.
