Can ethnic group from Zurich speak french?

I don't know much about switzerland except the certainty that they speak loads of languages. I be wondering if someone from zurich is likely to know how to speak french or just swiss german.

Answers:    Well, first of adjectives, French is (I think) the third most common FIRST jargon in Zurich (after Swiss-German and Italian)-Zurich apparently have the fourth-biggest French-first-language population in Switzerland (after Lausanne, Geneva, and...not sure, Basel probably). (People from France, the French chunk of Switzerland, Africa and even the odd Canadian)

Then, the kids do swot up French in institution from 5th grade on, but abundantly of them don't bother much with it after they graduate.

Keep contained by mind also that very various of the Swiss-Germans I've met are very modest something like their language ability, so just asking them "Do you speak French?" is possible to give you a "no" or "solitary a little bit", but if you if truth be told need comfort from them and you can only speak French there's at tiniest a 2/3 chance that they can do it.
About a fifth of them should know how to, as it's one of their 4 official language -- see

Many do, of course but youngsters prefer english even though they intellectual french in institution. In most upperclass shops/department stores french is spoken and for business man a must. Mostly German, but French and Italian as well.
I be just surrounded by Zurich for the holidays, and encountered various people who speak French. You stipulation only ask. I found the younger set spoke mostly Swiss German, English, Italian - if you ask to speak surrounded by French odds are pious someone does. About a third (the younger crowd) when I inquired did speak French. The older crowd (60 and older) spoke essentially Swiss German alone.

The further West you travel in Switzerland the more French will be spoken. Geneva...mostly French spoken for example.
Bien sur! Il y a beaucoup de gents qui parlent le francais!
As Zurich is situated within the German part of Switzerland the empire in Zurich speak German.
But surrounded by the German part of Switzerland French is the first foreign argot the children are taught contained by school. So everybody at tiniest speaks a little french. Some populace speak it better some less. But you won't hold any problems by talking French near.
Besides Zurich is very international. There are adjectives sorts of nationalities here and you will be within good company.

Best regard from Zurich!
of course! They widely speak german. A lot of them speak english and some french or italien.
i go to zurich in third echelon, they do speak some french, but not a lot. there's some mixed english and abundantly of german. It's actually easier to appreciate what people are conversation about near than in other countries.
