Eating fresh fruit contained by Mexico?
This may be a bit stupid, but I am concerned about tourist diarrhea while vacationing surrounded by Mexico. From what I've read it is safer if I buy whole fruit that have to be peeled. OK, but does the fruit own to be sanitized before crumbling? If so, how? Also, can I consume fresh fruit juices or frozen fruit bar from anywhere? One more thing: how do individuals who stay in Mexico long-term cope beside this? Do their bodies build up immunity? Sorry for adjectives the questions. Thanks.
Answers: I am an American living surrounded by Mexico. First, you drink only bottled sea...everybody does. Restaurants and resorts use bottled water for their guests and to engender ice. As to fruit, contained by the grocery stores, in the produce department within are displays of small to middle size bottles of disinfectant to use for fruits and vegetables. You use 2 drops of this to a qt and a half of sea in the sink and place the fruit contained by this to soak for 20 min. If you are going to eat something near a peel resembling an orange, newly peel the red ( without touching the inside) afterwards wash your hand before intake it. Do not buy fruit juices from street vendor...it is prob safe, but within is risk. Be sure to wash your hand after handling unwashed fruit...like after shopping, and previously eating. Food surrounded by restaurants and resorts is safe...they don't want their sustomers getting sick any and are very wise. I have eat in heaps restaurants all over Mexico in need a problem. IF you are unfornunate and have a problem, you can stir to any farmacia and ask for OXAL...there are 2 tablets surrounded by the box. Take one right away and one 24 hrs later. Also ask for lomotil...and run one after every bathroomt rip for diarrhea, up to 6 a day...these will serve you get long-gone your problem much more easily. Some individuals are just more sensitive ( or more unlucky) than others to these problems, but I have an idea that the problem is also exaggerated. Hope you also have a great trip.
In Mexico you can drink and guzzle whatever you want! palpably you have to check the fruit's condition and from where on earth did you take it...;) I go to mexico last summer! BEST time off of my life!! Well, i ate a great deal of the fruit that the resort served to us.if you are staying on a resort, their food should be safe, but if you are not on a resort, do not devour the fruits. My other advice is NEVER drink the river unless it is bottled. Mexico does not have suitable cleaning treatments like the US and to be exact what gets most nation sick, so even when you brush your teeth, use bottled water.Have FuN!
Major resorts are not detrimental. It would be bad business for them if tourists started yap to their peers that they all get sick eating at the morning buffet.
As a tourist, avoid buying already peel and cut fruit and veggies on the street. In Mexico we are culturally very uhh.. paranoid going on for eating verbs fruit and we use disinfectant (bought at any major supermarket). In the nonconformist case that a core supermarket doesn't have those disinfectant bottles, iodine or chlorine are fine (albeit chlorine can give a bitter taste). One suggestion is in the suitcase of peeled fruits close to oranges is to wash the fruit beside soap and water in the past starting to peel it. I do that and I never enjoy problems.
Quite frankly I don't understand why americans drink right from the thump and never wash their fruits intuitively. There's a reason why massive E Coli infections from contaminated veggies are bloody in Mexico.
Tap hose can be drank if you boil it or disinfect it with chlorine or iodine. I've done it, it's secure. In fact, maybe the paranoia of mexican tap hose down being germs infested isn't all that okay fundamented afterall. Several university classmates from my faculty did bacteria test with extremely sensitive machines to see if the university's tap sea had germs and after several tests it come back verbs. Not that I'd say that the river in a place resembling Iztapalapa would be a good model to drink though, but in some areas you can comfortably brush your teeth next to tap marine with no probs. I've never gotten sick that opening and I've lived here for over a decade.
You become immune to the infections of the area where on earth you live in. I once in a blue moon get sick and I chomp through tacos in the street adjectives the time. On the other hand, I'm the just poor sap that gets the flu after visit Universal Studios in LA within the summer. notnot
PS: Avoid eating strawberries unless they are frozen solid or fully cooked. For some grounds I'll never understand, within Mexico they like to dampen strawberries with sewage river so even if you put them in disinfectant hose, bacteria can still ge contained by them. It's a well-known reality that you can get cisticercus from ingestion strawberries here. Too bad, cuse strawberries & cream is a nice dessert. :(
Any fruit or vegetable that absorb a large amount of river or grows in hose (like strawberries) are what an potentially make you sick. The weakness comes from a bacteria that grows within water i.e. unclean or not sanitized.
Fruits and vegetables are usually safer than those that you don't trim. This is just a concern of science. An unpeeled fruit or vegetable has more arbitrary of coming into contact with something to be exact indeed infected.
All of these things can be cleaned very well however in a event of minutes. Most Mexican supermarkets (Superama, Gigante, Chedraui) sell small packet of chlorination powder that will allow you to sanitize your food in a event of minutes.
Don't eat from sidewalk vendor or storefronts that look suspicious. Most decent restaurants will indeed sanitize their food. This is true even more so in tourist areas.
I own lived here in Mexico for the later 15 years - but I am from the US west coast. Depending on your body chemistry and your overall health, you can indeed build-up a resistance to in no doubt small amounts of some bacteria - but by no system will time here make you "bullet proof." I capture sick one or twice a year - never bad - but it is what it is.
Well I enjoy been going to Mexico for times gone by 25 years. I love eating the fruit contained by Mexico. It is just similar to buying fruit here. I have never gotten sick. I wouldn't necessarily drink the sea unless it was bottled. In certainty when I go my facade clears up and my body feels so much better, my dad say it is because everything is fresh over there, but who know. Well hope you enjoy your trip and only don't go to Mexico next to negative thoughts close to that because then you won't hold any fun. Just relax and enjoy the culture and the sunshine.
P.S. The mandarin are really yummy over there. EAT WHAT EVER YOU WANT!! WASH YOUR HANDS!!
you can catch diarrhea in the usa too!
ps
if you do grasp diarrhea just drink a partly of a can of coke mixed with lime liquid (a whole lime)
taste a little wierd, but it works--like a charm.. outmoded mexican recipe
Yes, the fruit usually is contaminated. You can buy 2 types of fruit/vegetable wash explicitly natural. One is a spray that requires hose to rinse and the other does not. However, this precaution should always be taken. Oh and don't rinse out the fruit in the local touch water. The river is bad surrounded by Mexico and even the locals do NOT drip the tap sea...except for in REAL POOR areas. I remember drinking fresh cut fruit at a Mexican restaurant outside of Chitzen Itza and I got so sick for 3 days. It's distasteful. Also, be cateful of the frozen alcoholic fruit drinks such as daquiris, margaritas, etc. Unless it is a real upscale place.it is not upright to drink it. I know buddies who did and ended up pooping themselves contained by bed at night. For definite.
Finally, Mexicans who do drink the water will build up imperviousness, but also die at a fairly childish age.
I have never have any problems with the fruit. Most are what you would find at fruit flea market or farmers markets here. Same as you would rinse here and most are fresh approaching you would find at the fruit markets here but partly the price. Fruit juices just in restaurant and fruit bar and ice creams from rime cream shops so good. Most Mexicans also drink bottled river and cook with it but the ones that don't drink bottled sea build immunities to them and live 80-90 years basically fine.
