As for maps, us mexicans buy the map called Guía Roji. They enjoy the maps to Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey posted online for free on the internet. Just google Guia Roji and you'll find the recognized site. The site is in spanish, but it's the most recent map and it's the maps we use within Mexico City to move around, so you're assured they are accurate. I don't know if there's Guia Roji maps of highway between cities though.
As for driving, you'll just enjoy to see it for yourself. Ignore what a lot of associates are saying that everyone is rude and everyone does what they touch like. Drivers within Mexico City act approaching rabid animals, but drivers in rural areas are without a flaw polite drivers. It's no different than if you have ever driven on the interstates surrounded by Los Angeles (except that the roads here aren't that well maintained).
Most salaried highways are within good condition, except the one call "Autopista del Sol" between Cuernavaca and Acapulco. Everyone in Mexico know that that specific highway charges way too much lolly and the condition is dangerous to speak the least but it's the solely way to drive to Acapulco unless you desire to choo-choo train behind piercing trucks for 14 hours at 5 mph for free.
Oh, paid mexican highway have something call "Green Angels" which are mechanics that fix small problems of your car for free. The oldest rule of the book is that locals here close to to pay the 5 dollars to enter the closest highway beside a failing car and cheat on the service. Haha.
I own traveled by bus in much of Mexico and found that the toll roads are excellent (same as within US, but fewer lanes). Also in attendance were plentiful places to buy gas and food along the way. There be also many toll booths where on earth you pay bread. Everything looked clean and undisruptive to me.
Traveling by deluxe bus is not expensive but traveling in your own vehicle might be, since you will enjoy to pay the toll and buy gas etc. I never missed my sports car since in most Mexican towns they hold excellent ground transportation and the taxis are also in principle inexpensive and safe.

Ive be to mexico so many times within a car. It is not adjectives that save to turn through the california borders the police there are not tremendously nice. i live in cali and my dad other goes to texas consequently to mexico. its a long ways but better to stay longer in the U.S than Mexico lol. So if you wish to drive be careful end in there are profusely of crazy drivers. I drove to Mexico City and back once. It adjectives depends on where you are going contained by Mexico, but our trip was 40 hours non-stop. Between paying for gas and the "cuotas" it be almost the same price as flying. Of course, you can dance on other roads, but I'm not sure how that works. I would google it because I did that and found a lot of information. You'll hear deeply of negatives, but ethnic group do it all the time and are fine. Just take heed because drivers in Mexico don't exactly act in accordance with the rules of the road...they do what they want and it can be scary.
