Driving from Laredo, TX to Monterrey, what's the best way and what else is there to see in Mexico?

I'm American but I'm fluent in Spanish, I'll be there with another American friend with our passports, where is the best way to cross the border in our rental car into Mexico from Laredo? I'd like to hit up Monterrey and I need suggestions on what else is cool to see there? Any ideas?? Thanks in advance.

the best way to cross the border is thru Laredo Texas, the road is great from laredo to monterrey, you make in car about 2 and half hours, the problem is that you have to pay for the use of this road or highway (sorry for my english), tha cost you pay is about 20 dollars on this road.
