I am spending some time within Mexico City this summer, and am wondering: What to do?
Help!
Answers: Lots of things to do!
In Mexico City, near the Zócalo, nearby is the Templo Mayor with Aztec ruins. There is also the Cathedral adjacent and Bellas Artes (fine art museum) with its heaps murals. The Casa de las Azulejos (House of Tiles) is nearby and have a Sanborns (chain restaurant) inside. The Zócalo also has murals inside. The square outside have entertainers and flea market. There are inexpensive tour buses you can ride to see the city.and use as transportation to see the Anthropology Museum in Chapultapec Park. There is Alameda Park not far from the Zócalo near its many sea fountains and huge statue of Benito Juarez.
On Paseo de la Reforma, there is the Monumento de la Independencia, a high-ceilinged statue with a gold ingots angel on top, and 4 larger, shorter statues around it.
North of Mexico City, there is the Plaza de la Tres Culturas, a church that be built of pyramid stones, where Juan Diego be baptized, and the scene of bloody student protests in 1968.
Further north is the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe (actually, in that are 3 there, one of which is closed down). It be where Juan Diego saw Our Lady of Guadalupe. In 2002, it be where Juan Diego be canonized by Pope John Paul II, becoming the first indigenous saint of Mexico.
Further north are the Pyramids of Teotihuacán, well worth the trip to see Aztec ruins.

Mexico City has three biggest attractions for tourists:
1. Museums. The best museums in Mexico are within Mexico City. You MUST visit the Anthropology Museum (archaeologists plundered Mexico's foremost archaeological sites to bring the best stuff to this museum), the Modern Art Museum (impressive collection of Frida Kalho and Diego Rivera paintings, among copious others), the Fine Art Palace (don't miss the folkloric ballet) and the Templo Mayor Museum.
2. Restaurants. The best restaurants in Mexico are within Mexico City. Many of the excellent ones, as El Cardenal or la Taberna del Leon, are very expensive, and they worth every peso you spend within them. For budget travelers, try tacos at El Tizoncito or El Califa del Leon and "tacos de canasta" de la abuela (it is a street vendor at the corner of Rio Rhin Street and Rio Lerma Street; dont' verbs, I eat here at least once a week and never enjoy had a stomach problem).
3. Trips to the surrounding smaller towns: Teotihuacan is one of the most interesting archaeological sites you would ever be. Cuernavaca, Tula, Tepozotlan, Valle de Bravo, Tepoztlan, Queretaro and Taxco certainly worth the trip.
Enjoy!

Mexico City is the cultural center of Mexico. There are an unlimited number of museum, historical buildings, etc. Go to the zocolo.explicitly the center square of the city. Visit the cathedral, the Frida Khalo house, the governor's mansion (where there are murals from Diego Rivera). Go on light of day trips to Puebla (2 hrs), Queretaro (3). Buy yourself a Lonely Planet on Mexico and go nuts. There's closely to do. Keep in mind that it usually rain a lot contained by the afternoons from May to September. You also need to mind... try to go to ATMs inside shopping centers, not on the street.
There's something for everyone here, so it depends on what you're looking for. If you want to call in museums, definitely run to the Anthropology Museum, the Palace of Fine Arts (there's a theater as well as severe and temporary exhibitions, as resourcefully as impressive murals), Museum of San Ildefonso usually have interesting exhibitions (downtown Mexico City), the cathedral and the ruins of Tenochtitlan. There's a lot to do contained by downtown Mexico City, lots of old buildings and museums. Other museums worth visit are the Museum of Modern Art and Rufino Tamayo Museum, both near Chapultepec Park (kind of approaching Mexico City's Central Park).
Coyoacan is also very interesting, as okay as some museums in the nouns, such as the Frida Kahlo museum. Xochimilco (south of Mexico City) is interesting as well, packed with canal where you can bring a boat ride on a "trajinera". If you go to Coyoacan for a light of day, you could also check out San Angel (now mostly residential, but with lots of nice colonial houses) , especially on a Saturday, which is when an art souk is held (bazaar del sábado).
For nightlife, you could check out the Zona Rosa, where lots of bar and clubs can be found. Also worthwile is the Condesa district, which is supposed to be the hippest part of town, near lots of interesting restaurants and buildings (sometimes overrated). Polanco is a nice area as ably, but mostly for high-end shopping and eating.
Be sure to check out the pyramids of Teotihuacan, roughly 1.5 hours from Mexico Cityl.
Good luck.
