No, No, NO,...passports re NOT needed for LAND travel to and from Mexico now. You obligation photo I.D. and a proff of citizenship..which can be either an assport OR a certified birth pass. See site below to raed the current info. Passports for LAND travel requirement has no set date, but will prob. be summer 2009. You call for a passport. The San Ysidro crossing to San Diego will accept a photo ID close to a DL right now, they can't hold on to you out of your home country, but it will be a hassle.
