Common misconception is that you already want a passport... best bet right now till June of 2009 is to give somebody a lift your birth certificate or Naturalization papers along near a state ID and they will let you through... If your not a citizen, afterwards you should have the legalized papers that are required to come back. Also if you are a citizen, any by birth or naturalization, you CANNOT be denied entrance to the US.
