My friend took an EF College break tour there. It cost her 1800 for round trip airfare, hotels, breakfast each day, and tour director with some adventures. They embezzle care of the details. All she have to pay for be lunch and dinner (which is cheap). This program is cheap because it's a student travel thing, so it have discounted prices. That and you can opt to stay behind and do more exploring for yourself. Right very soon there is a mart going on, where you go and get a discount when you put in the promo code hesseln1188. She save at least $50 from it. I don' t know if that help but its an option. Tranquilo Backpackers contained by San Jose will help you out alot. They own a pool and its got info on tours etc. Only stay within San Jose if you have to though, it is not undamaging to go out at hours of darkness there.
Mal Pais is a must! There are some cool hostels here. Cabinas Playa Santa Teresa (it is adjectives one big beach both Mal Pais y Santa Teresa) costs $50 total for 4 general public with a kitchenette. The Mal Pais surf club is around $15 per human being and they have a pool which is nice. lots of well brought-up info here.

Most towns hold hotels for around $10-$15 per person but that may not include AC or hot hose down, but I get along only fine without both!
The Arenal Volcano is a big tourist attraction as it is a live, involved, volcano with lava flows.
