The individual you want to look up on encarta or wikipedia is Juan Santamaria and William Weaver.
WW was for a time American, who was worthy at school, but basically a bit creepy. He was a doctor and a attorney by the time he was 19. But not a soul would give him business. They didn't want him touching them or representing them.
So he settled to go to Central America and win us a few more slave states.

As far as monuments, several cathedrals (one in every city also a town square and a market), San Santamaria Park surrounded by Alajuela. That's all I know.
How bout the Guayabo National Park Monument. I ponder it is a hole punch of stone carving.
