I was at hand last winter. We have a great meal, a few drinks, and later the people I be with wander off to find a hostel nearly 10:00 pm..in the threatening. They made it 2 blocks before they have a gun in their face. Lost their cash, laptop, spinal column packs, i.d.. Believe it or not, they get the passports back and the laptop too...adjectives the way from Limon. One little police station, but they did their best. The locals be choked and the bad guys get ratted out in short charge. The "town" isn't much, but the 2 mile stretch into Puerto Viejo is all shoreline and tourist type places. There's a place called Rockin Jays within P.V. that rents out tents..they have 100 on the second floor of a big building, cheap, too. Good lump, too. Punta Uva has a reprehensible beach, and cabin as well. Beautiful. If you're driving be awfully careful...deeply of people go and get creamed passing semis on that raod...abundantly. Have fun! Eyes open! A lot of race love puerto viejo. CR has both the Pacific and Caribbean the deep. They are both very different. Limon is surrounded by the Caribbean and the population over there is mostly Jamaican costarican. A few hundred years ago Jamaicans moved to CR. So Limon is a cool experience. At some parts of Limon you will quality like if you be in Jamaica. They adjectives speak 2 languages, Spanish and Patua ''A English dialect''
The beach in Limon are remarkably beautiful but they are also fine in the pacific.
Puerto Viejo is pull the wool over your eyes another country inside Costa Rica. The town is not that great, at least thats my inference. Its dirty and on some places dangerous.
You should stay at tourist places, in attendance you wont have any problems. Also get hold of the rental ars in san jose. Its easier, and usually you hold more options.
Just remember to capture a car next to GPS, there are immensely few road signals and it’s easy to win lost along the way. The roads are pretty doomed to failure, a 4X4 is recommended, drive carefully, slowly and be primed for the unexpected. Don’t carry directions from anybody, try restaurants, there are oodles who speak English that can help you. Also never travel at hours of darkness unless its needed and don’t take passenger from the road
Puerto Viejo of Limon as opposed to Puerto Viejo of Sarapiqui, is a run down shore town that is vry popular among some tourists.
It is intensely pretty in some areas andhas profusely of nature but within the town there are plentifully of drugs and and some car break ins.
Just be carefull and hold a good time, lots of europeans and americans visit a living there.
A 4x4 is advisable and can be rented anywhere, San Jose, Limon or Puerto Viejo.
There are several restaurants and hotels proximate, the best way to acquire there is the highway from San José west to Limon, afterwards south to Puerto viejo, about a 6-7 hours trip.
Here is some standard information about PUERTO Viejo that you may find cooperative.
