Is mace/pepper spray legitimate surrounded by Peru?
I don't speak Spanish, but am helping my girlfriend do research for her trip to Peru. Can anyone tell me if pepper spray/mace is trial in Peru? Are the law different for different "states" and cities in Peru? She will be basically outside of Arequipa for most of her trip.
Answers: I live in Peru and they are not unlawful. They are quite difficult to find here but my with the sole purpose concern is that she will travel by plane and it is illegal to fly near these items! So how is she/you planning on bringing them to Peru? Peru is not a federal country so there is simply one law for the entire country, different states do not enjoy different laws.
If she is worried something like her security (thus the use of pepper spray) I recommend she sticks to polite neighbourhoods like Miraflores or San Isidro and that she doesn't waddle alone at night and things you wouldn't do within any country anyway.
Mace and pepper spray (2 different agents) are a gray area contained by Peru. A lot of people hold them, but if the police wants to bestow you a hard time for it, they can.
Keep within mind that mace and pepper spray are illegal to pack and bring on a plane, even within checked baggage, as the altitude will create too much pressure and result in them to explode. There are special canisters that are made for nouns travel, but they are only sold to those that are licensed to use it.
You can buy pepper spray contained by Peru at places like Armaq (at the Jockey Plaza shopping center), so it shouldn't be a problem. your biggest problem is going to be getting it within the plane.
Best to buy it here in Peru when you arrive.
PD: As soon as you amble out of customs in the airport, capture an official hackney cab, don't wait until you're outside immersed contained by the crowd of people waiting for relatives and pirate taxi looking for a client. There is were most unsuspecting tourists get hold of things stolen. After that, you'll have no problems within Lima, which is generally not dangerous.
