Is your passport a Salvadoran passport or a US passport?
If it is a US passport, you will not be allowed to board the plane within the US, and even if you did, you would not be able to return.
If then again your passport is Salvadoran, you should not have a problem flying to El Salvador as long as you own proper identification. You still will not be capable of retun to the US with an expired passport, though.

You won't be allowed on the plane. If they miss the expiry date and you get to El Salvador, you will be allowed to enter, since you're a citizen. Go to your embassy everywhere you are and solve it there.

While El Salvador may allow you entry by virtue of your citizenship, the airlines will potential not board you at all. Best bet is to renew the passport at your Embassy or nearest Consulate while still surrounded by the United States.
