Does anyone know any interesting places to stop by surrounded by Rome away from the tourist traps?

Answers:    Most of the major tourist attractions are economically worth a visit. My favorite of adjectives the better-known attractions is the Pantheon. The Vatican Museum is also fascinating.

However, in attendance are also a lot of less important known, but interesting things within Rome. San Pietro in Vincoli displays the chains that St Peter be brought to Rome and the Moses of Michelangelo. Santa Maria Sopra Minerva near the Pantheon is worth a call on.

Some of the more obscure, but interesting, things are:

The outlook through the keyhole at the Consiglio di Malta on Aventine Hill. There's a picture here: http://www.theculturedtraveler.com/Archi... and others:

This is worth the effort to find (close to Circus Maximus) - relatively few do. This site hand over directions on how to find it: http://wikitravel.org/en/Rome/Aventino

The Crypt at Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini is also worth a visit if you're interested surrounded by seeing works of art made from the bones of .more than 4000 monks. http://www.cappucciniviaveneto.it/cappuc...

The Museum of the Souls of Purgatory is essentially a ghost museum.

Or you could dance to the Pasta Museum or the Presepi (nativity scene) museum across the street from the forum. There's also a 2000+ year old pyramid but it's somewhat more out of the way.

I also similar to the Mouth of Truth.

no in my feelings if you are in rome you should look in Vatican city and St Peters. Even if you are not religious it is an amazing place with diverse tours avaliable of you can just hoof it rouns by yourself.
In rome itself you have the spanish steps, which are great to sit on and examine the world go by. The via Condotti for the shops or the Piazza Navona for the restaurants, the fountains and the atmosphere.
That said Rome is incredibly busy, the traffic is a nightmare and nearby are tourist everywhere so to make your existence easier use the metro system which consists of 2 lines and is very confident to use. The lines cross at the main train station within rome so all the sights are slickly accessible.

Enjoy
San Clemente - three level church that go down to when it was pagan
Stroll around the ghetto and Trastevere - and munch through at Sorella Margherita in the Ghetto
I also vote for the catacombs and the keyhole scenery of St Peters
Campo di fiori is great
Eat at Al Moro near the Trevi fountain - enjoy the lamb
Check out this article about the best gelato within Rome - I ate there and they are right!

Google Rome and travel on the New York Times website for lots of other great tips

Buon viaggio!
Check out some of the catacombes. They are greatly interesting, and not that heavily visited.

Also, a moment ago outside Rome, is Ostia Antica. It's a bit like Pompeii, but on a slightly smaller level. It's absolutely mesmeric, and almost completed deserted. You can get near using the Metro, and then an overground train.

And yes, keep under surveillance out for pickpockets. They'll usually be children who come up to you holding a newspaper, pretending to be imploring. Meanwhile, underneath the paper, they will hold their hand within your bag, stealing your money.
