Vatican is that ROME, ITALY or ROME, GEORGIA? well you hold internet connections, so why not type in what you want and inevitability because i dont have any belief where you want to run or what you want to visit.try a travel agency and they can set up a tour group that can be smaller number expensive than going at it alone
Rome is huge and the attractions are really spread out - I stayed at the Hotel Ponte Sisto - We were walking distance from the Trevi fountain, Piaza Narvone, Travestere and right beside Campo di Fiore - The colleseum and the Vatican be just a short bus ride away - Huge City - loads of attractions - impossible to answer..... They enjoy loads of apartments in the foundation and it is often cheaper to dance down this route than taking a hotel in Rome (they are really expensive).
They also operate a 2 dark minimum stay so it's even good for a short stay.
We stayed at Casa Primarosa from that site within October. It was a gorgeous apartment and feel like staying at a friend's home (without them here of course).
The service at cross-pollinate is very perfect. When we got to the house, we couldn't catch hold of the owner (had written the phone number wrong) and they answered the phone at the office (10pm at night) and sorted it inside minutes.
They speak English too which helps.
We walk everywhere from there and it is contained by a non-touristy area too so we didn't get hold of ripped off at breakfast or anything.
I would emphatically stay there again but hold a look at the site anyway because they have lots of apartments right within the centre.
And. at lowest when you stay in an apartment, you don't own a chamber maid banging your door down when you want a lie-in!

We stayed within the Marriot in Rome and the with the sole purpose thing we have to do was block 1 bus and we were right contained by front of everything Everything is pretty spread out. I stayed near the crucial train station so I was competent to catch the metro efficiently to all the crucial attractions.
Avoid the bus tour - its crap. At night travel to Trastevere to eat - its where on earth all the best restaurants are and a really nice hamlet.

There is no one best place to stay. One entry to consider is noise. I approaching to stay as Casa Tra Noi, http://www.tranoi.it/English/Home/tabid/... , because of the quiet neighborhood. It have easy access to public transportation and is just a 10 minute walk to St. Peter's. I lately stayed at The Secret Garden near the train station. It's also in close proximity public transport, http://www.secretgardenrome.com/ .
I like to use www.venere.com to look for hotel rooms. The map are good.
If you've never be to Rome the hop-on-hop-off buses are a good alternative to a group tour. The information isn't watertight, but you aren't waiting on the person who have to buy one more t-shirt. I travel to Italy every other year and used it end year as a quick transportation system to take to the places I wanted to turn (which weren't always the tourist spot, but in the vicinity it).
I went to Rome contained by April and stayed at the Hotel Regno. I have connected a site although it was not the one I used to book it - I can't remember which site I used.

The hotel be mid mid-priced, but I would recommend paying for this hotel as it was so crucial. We were one street away from the Trevi fountain, and one street away from the Pantheon. The Colosseom be a 10-15 minute walk which be a pleasant walk as you can put your foot past the Roman Forum.
The just place that I would say isn't walking distance is the Vatican. Although my sister syated at the Hotel Tritone (which is lately round the corner from the Regno, and she recommended it to me, but there be no vacancies), and she walked it - possibly she is fitter.
You can buy a ticket for the open top bus which is valid for 2 days (hop on-hop off), and this will run you to all the sights including the Vatican. I would recommend this, as they are every few minutes and you get hold of audio commentry through earphones.
I have a fabulous time and would recommend it. I hope this has be of some use.
