Answers:    It's a Catholic tradition, believe it or not. The day until that time lent starts, is Martedi Grasso, or Mardi Gras in New Orleans. It literally manner "fat tuesday", because it's the afternoon before you start giving up things for lent, approaching meat and whichever your particular choice is. Italy is not the one and only country to celebrate Carnival, Brazil is also a country that remarkably enjoys it as resourcefully.
The Carnival of Venice is a beautiful celebration and a great source of pride for Italians. It's the best surrounded by Europe, and Italians make sure it remains so. It's much duplicate way as the US take pride in Mardi Gras contained by New Orleans, without the exessive opulence.
The Carnival of Venice is merely more foremost and peculiar, because of the masks, but throughout Europe, contained by particular surrounded by Italy (Carnevale) and Germany (Fasching), it is, as Irr ational rightly points out, a very popular celebration, base on a religious festival. It’s roots, however, could even be pre Christian (the ancient Roman Saturnalia and the Greek feast of Dyonisius and the Germanic-Celtic tradition of “kicking out Winter’s spirits"). People like to paint the town red, the time of year is usually linked to their principle or belief. It becomes a tradition and hey presto – you enjoy the Venetian 18th Century Balls and Masks. HEY!! I live in Italy but I'm not from here. The intact Carnival celebration isn't limited to Venice. All of Italy celebrate it. Italy is a roman catholic country and carnival is a celebration of the start of lent. most people afford up things for lent, don't eat meat on Fridays and it results the 40 days Jesus spent in the dessert since easter.etc...google lent if your not a roman catholic as my brain may not remember adjectives of the exact facts!

It is a huge party that last weeks and it is the BEST!! it's roots go fund to Catholicism but the party is 100% modern and a blast!
