Black Girl Going to India?
My boyfriend went to India (he's indian) closing week and wants me to come fix together him there for a month. I granted to go. Now, i'm totally freaking out researching more around Delhi and places i'd like to progress. But I have some concerns!
How are Black-American women treated surrounded by India?
What are some things I should prepare for before I hold complete culture shock? (ie. the water ur bum toilets hehe...beggars...etc)
Answers: Keep an expand mind and I'm sure you'll have a great time. There is so much delicate architecture, culture, colors- it's great. Also, I'm sure you won't be treated any differently than any American visitor, so expect to be treated outstandingly nicely. Every time I budge I am so impressed with how friendly and benevolent everyone is. Being a woman, from America, you'll probably get some question (what's it like to be a woman within America, what do you think of India, etc etc). Dress conservatively- cover your knees and shoulders. If you similar to to shop, you'll have a blast-- everything is smaller quantity expensive in India than the US.
I'm assuming you'll be staying near family of your BF- it'd be a nice trait to bring the parents a gift from the US-- a pitcher, decorative bowl-- something for the house. If he have siblings, it'd also be a nice gesture to bring the something as all right.
Regarding your specific questions- I'm going to be honest here... yes, you will see a lot of beggars and if you're approaching me it will break your heart. Don't give them money directly, it's advise to donate to a charity instead (UNICEF, for example) as the money does not usually stay with the individual you give to. (Read "A Fine Balance")... Have appendage sanitizer, Kleenex and a travel pack of wet ones on you when you're out and about-- you never know when they'll come within handy.
Also, check with your doctor in the past you leave. There are a couple of Rx's you'll want to hold before you go-

Stereotypes in india are channel diiferent in idia the contained by the west. I know some rarul indain people consider that blacks are far mor educated consequently indians and some who think at hand dangerous. Indians who are urban are a moment or two different. THe youth try to copy what we in the US do. The elderly are more conservative. The best place you sould turn is Cnahdigarh in punjab its cleaner afterwards most of india and is THE place to shop. you won't be treated bad contained by India... Indians are very compassionate.. you'll be treated near respect and gratitude. But I should tell u to be respectful to Indian relatives and culture.
Sweet heart you are illinformed on India. Beggers are a common verbs in America as all right so no worries. Wear decent (don't expose) clothing contained by Public places. You will be with your BF so he shall appropriate care of you. If you are going to stay next to his extended family, seize information on family traditions. Indians respects Guests and it is a terrifically safe and dynamic country. You win everything in India so you may travel neutral. there are lots of gloomy skinned people surrounded by africa and as a tourist you'll probably get smaller quantity racism there than here within the states.
and culture shock is inevitable. bring your own tp and feminine sanitary devices. they don't use tp there, they use their moved out hand and a bucket of marine, so don't ever offer your vanished hand to shake or even point at anyone beside your left mitt. and you'll see poverty like you've never see here, but don't start giving people money, you freshly can't help everyone, and contained by the cities there can be scam. get out of the cities if you can. wear long sleeves and cover your legs within public.
be careful what you chomp through and drink, in precise watch out for rime and iced drinks. bottled water is fine and several upscale places have filter water.
it's really an amazing place though.
First sour, some Indians are blacker than black people, so color won't really be an issue. As for culture shock, it all depends on how okay you can adapt. Keep an unseal mind, India is crowded, especially Delhi.
