2 weeks surrounded by India, arriving and departing from Mumbai. Any itinerary suggestions?

Next month I leave for India. I fly into Mumbai and out of in attendance two weeks later. Can anybody suggest an itinerary??
I be thinking Mumbai - Hampi - South Goa - Mumbai, but am open to any suggestions.
I am childlike, very well-travelled, interested within culture and history, moreso interested in interacting beside people (locals and fellow travellers), and wouldn't mind a bit of shindig time as well.
This trip is newly a taste of India for adjectives reference so I don't expect to see a large amount. I just want a great trip that will bestow me a glimpse of a country that I'm sure I'll return to in the deeply near adjectives.
Thanks!

Answers:    I travelled a similar route over two weeks in April 2007, but I started within Bangalore and returned from Mumbai. (less back tracking this approach!)

A lot of it depends on how you prefer to travel and budget. Plane, train, bus, night time or hours of daylight time?

If possible I would do Hampi first, I think the train would be the best way out (depending on train times and duration, plus no flights from Mumbai to this part of India), I believe you own to change at Hubli or Guntakal, later it is about 3 hours to Hospet (the nearest town to Hampi). I spent 3 night here, could easily hold another night or two. Didn't find it un-hygenic as another poster have mentioned, basic yes! Vegetarian rural community for religious reasons, so no arbitrariness of any dodgy meat making you ill.

I after took a train (6:30am but four hours late) back from Hospet to Madgaon (south goa), get a taxi to Palolem (2 nights). The trek from Hospet to Goa can be done daytime on train (about 8 hours) or night sleeper bus.

Then I spent a darkness in Panjim the state possessions (got there on 2 buses, took almost 3 hours). After here I got a hackney cab upto Anjuna, spent 9 days here I think. This is handy for Vagator, Calangute & Baga. I get the train upto Mumbai from here (10 hours), but given the choice again I would fly, especially if it was merely a 2 week visit.

Basically if you can afford to do internal flights, after do it! (i.e Mumbai fly to goa, train/bus to Hampi, train/bus Goa, Goa fly to Mumbai

If the budget is tight and If you don't mind travelling on over-night sleeper buses and what to make the most of light of day time then do that!

If you don't mind spending daylight on a train, do that!

Hope this helps.

If you can shift to Rajasthan that will give you more diverse and colorful glimpse of india
Starting next to Hampi is probably not so good an impression; hygienic standards there are pretty low, and you wouldn't resembling to start your trip catching Montezuma's (or, in this overnight case, Shiva's) revenge, would you? I'd turn the route around and start with Goa, which also is more Western style (Portuguese colony up to 1961), and later travel to Hampi, i.e., Hospet respectively, that's the town nearby, where on earth there are the bigger hotels. You can next return to North Goa, maybe.

My itinerary would be:
Mumbai - South Goa (by plane and taxi) - Hospet/Hampi (by bus) - North Goa (by bus) - Mumbai (by plane)
In Goa, I recommend Palolem Beach contained by the South, and Vagator Beach or a stay in the Goan assets Panjim (Panaji) further up North.

It's a shame that you only hold two weeks' time; my itinerary was somewhat longer (6 months), and South India really is gorgeous. But Goa and Hampi are the places where you can come upon lots of fellow travellers who'll provide you with information for your subsequent trip.

Enjoy!
