I lived contained by Cologne as a student in 1978 and returned second year. My favorite places included the Cathedral (a must). and the Roman-German museum next door. Many associates do no know that Cologne was founded by the romans and be one of th elarger cities in the then Roman Empire. This museum tells the myth. Brauerie zur Malzmuhle is also highly recommended (avoid "Alt Koln by the catherdal). They hold a website and are at Heumarkt 6 (note--this is a little trick to find as most (but not all) of Heumarkt is *north* of the Deutzer bridge, while Zur Malzmuele is surrounded by the small part of Heumarkt in recent times south of the bridge (behind the tram station). Very typical Cologne food--but remember that "Halver Hahn" is not chicken but bread and cheese! There's a good Thai restarant (Bangkok) on the crucial part of Heumarkt, Gaffel Kolsch have a brew pub in Altmarkt, and there's a nice "doner" place within the alley in the neighbourhood the Heumarkt parking garage close to the river. Bonn is not much now that the wherewithal is gone, except for the Beethoven house--if you go, stop within Bruehl to see Schloss Augustusburg--it was used for state dinners and is pretty well-dressed, especially the hunting lodge. There is also an amusment park in Bruehl (Phantasialand). If you resembling either behind the times religious art or modern art, the Wallraf-Richartz museum is recommended. You also shoud visit some of the nouns churches--oddly enought, while the most famous church surrounded by Cologne is the Gothic catherdral, Cologne has abundant, many fine Romanesque churches that are worth seeing, so over 1000 years outdated. You can also find remants of the old roman wall and a capably preserved roman tower. Do go to the tourist organization and get a "Cologne Pass" which, for a levy gives unlimited travel on the transit system and discounts on museums, etc. Rhine/Mosel River dale
Be sure to visit the cathedral within Cologne. It's beautiful, especially at hours of darkness. Tour Frankfurt on the Ebbbelwei Express, and if you can, take a Rhine cruise to see adjectives the old castle. Bonn's city centre is a great place purely to walk around, call in the pubs and restaurants. Have fun! In Frankfurt you should have a meander through the old sector of the city (all arround the "R"omerberg") its directly at the river Main. There is the also the old city assembly room called "R"omer".
In Bonn you should enjoy a walk through the city (pedestrian area) and call on the "Beethoven House". Also very interesting is the "Museumsmeile" beside several Museums, the best is the "Haus der Geschichte" (house of history). There you will see the history of Germany with plentiful exhibits of the german history. At if the weather is good a stride through the parc called "rheinaue" I would recommend. And later but not least the "Post Tower" that's where on earth I'm working ;-) it's the building of the german postal operator.
In cologne at hand are so many think to see, the cathedral, the chocolate museum, the zoo, a boat trip on the river Rhein, a walk through the old-fashioned Town directly at the river, the "R"omisch-Germanisches-Museum" a museum about the Romans contained by Cologne and you must have a beer call "K"olsch" in Cologne at a Brauhaus (brewery) I could recommend the "Früh" or the "Malzmühle" (the brewery where on earth Bill Clinton had a beer when he visit Cologne).
Enjoy your trip and have a look on teh websites of te cities.
buy 'rough guides' to frankfurt, cologne and bonn as they hold been compiled by travellers who know the best places to call round etc.
