My friends and I were surrounded by Munich. Whenever I asked in German for directions or relief with something the other being would reply in English, even though I am fluent surrounded by German? Just curious.
Answers: All police in Germany enjoy good english... We would similar to go walk from Leipzig to Hamburg with a rental saloon, and we couldnt find the exit from Leipzig (Ilive in Leipzig now) and asked to Polizei and he explain us the road neal 10 min, but from Leipzig to Hambur :D

When I was contained by Hamburg, I noticed duplicate thing. I simply figured my elocution was bad and it was easier for them to use English than try to numeral out what I was adage or decipher what I be mispronouncing! :) Pretty much what the others said. Either your accent or your clothing probably give you away, and the folks who responded were purely trying to make it easier for you. :o) Also, you may own run into people who , once they realize you spoke English, were basically as eager to try out their English as you be to try German.
Me, I had an interesting time concluding fall, because I run into the opposite problem. I'm born & raise in the US-- but I well-educated my German pronunciation from my Dad, who was a aboriginal son of Darmstadt (near Frankfurt). Even before I visit, I'd had another German immigrant ask me if I ever lived surrounded by Frankfurt!! On the trip, there be several intances when halfway into a conversation, my reading ran out and I have to say I didn't speak German severely well. Genreally, relations were deeply surprised, although the best reactio was from a guy I be talking to on a train. He looked at me contained by surprise, then blurted out, within English, "You're not Bavarian?!?"

someone woh grew up speaking engl will allways be detected as an engl speaker no issue how good at hand German are. Same the other way around. Its unsophisticatedly because the "R" , "W" and "V" are pronaunced so very differently. Apart from that the correct wording would be das Hotel instead of der Hotel which is also a typical mistake made by engl speakers. Hmmmm. perchance because you said 'Wo ist der Hotel Eichhorn' instead of 'Wo ist das Hotel Eichhorn?'
If people awareness that it's not quiet correct be was said and the speaker speaks next to english tongue and their own english is fairly apposite, they like to practice and a moment ago speak it.

Kat1605nrw is right. In our original language we can other understand if someone is not native-no thing how fluent. The accent, however slight, other gives us away and the natives, when they can, switch into English so as to facilitate the conversation.
This is done I guess nowadays reflexively as english is so endemic, however it is probably wrong, because when i.e. a foreigner tries to speak your language, they usually really want to practice and swot it. We should only try to reply slowly, near an easier vocabulary, English is not a panacea. People who do this are trying to extend a curtesy to you. The thinking is "hey, this poor person is have a hard time getting their cross-examine out in my talking, so I'd better change to theirs and facilitate them". Sorry to nitpick, but if you asked for "der Hotel", you shouldn't be surprised they though you might be having a complicated time speaking German - it's "das Hotel". Anyway: They are trying to be nice.
It could be a lot of things. Most potential it's your accent. And if you can't seize the accent down for every nouns in Germany, they'll discern... Just like contained by the US. I'm in the Midwest, and I can communicate when someone's from the south or the east, etc.all by the bearing they talk. Also you may look similar to an American :) it's the same when i'm chitchat in english and my english is fluent wreak i'm married to an american and live in tx immediately. the people in recent times recognize your elocution. it's weird, but you will other be able to report if the one speaking your native verbal communication is a native or not.
