Any German speakers want to give a hand me swot German?
I'm a linguistics student in the US, and I've started out trying to swot up German. Right now, I'm using 'l'allemand sans peine' and FSI German courses. I'd really similar to to speak with actual German speakers though, as it's different than study from a book and audio.

there are approaching 5 different dialects of german in germany. most elder folks wont understand the correct proper english (hoch deutsch) unless you converse to someone from a large city. They will use for example the region slang or the town slang...example is where on earth I live the say Was issn des? a bit than ''was ist das''...but audio is a great start thats how I learned and afterwards you pick up the rest later by trying to chitchat to germans.Good luck ...macht spass.. I can't help you, but I of late wanted to comment that "most elder folks wont understand the correct proper german (hoch deutsch) unless you confer to someone from a large city" is positively untrue, everyone understands Hochdeutsch, it's the one and only language spoken on national TV and radio ;-) There are regional varieties, but even if family grew up in some remote little town and speak a large dialect at home are they able to speak and recognize normal German.
