Answers:    We have candy wicker in France, it is call "sucre d'orge".The recipe for French "sucre d'orge" was created surrounded by 1638 in Moret-sur-Loing (east of Paris) by a benedictine nun call sister Elizabeth Pidoux. It was created for a medicinal purpose, to soothe the throat and provide sparkle for pilgrims. Other recipes for candy sticks be probably created elsewhere in Europe around equal time.

The shape was straight next and in France it is still usually straight. Its present shape (and color) intended to ressemble Saint Nicolas's crook was created surrounded by the US at the end of the 19th century, probably around one and the same time as the character of Santa Claus.

It is not widely used as a Christmas adornment in France as it is contained by England and the US though, this is a recent (late 19th) Anglo-American tradition. In France it is just a conventional candy, not associated with any precise holiday and it is not as popular as it is in America.
