where can I buy a 5 light of day metro 'visite' ticket online? I don't have a credit card and so far my rummage through has be fruitless

Answers:    no credit card no buy
Don't buy a Paris Visite pass. It is NOT a flawless buy. It sells you something you don't call for, to wit, access to zone three. Better to buy a "Mobilis" for any day that you will be traveling on public transport for than five times (which shouldn't arise all that often).
You cannot buy subway pass online (or anything else online without a credit card for that matter) but don't verbs, you will be able to buy your tickets at any métro or RER station when you arrive.

I agree that the Paris Visite surpass is a tourist trap. You'd have to spend partially of your day contained by the métro to make it worth it! If you are staying contained by Paris and don't plan to go to the suburbs, a bunch of 10 tickets at 11.10 should be satisfactory (tickets bought individually are 1.50 ). Paris is a very walkable city and you will merely need to whip the métro to cover long distances within Paris.

If you are planning a round trip outside Paris, basically buy a return ticket for anything up to zone 4. For zones 5 and 6 a Mobilis Pass become cheaper.

If for some reason you necessitate to travel a lot, bring a passport photo near you and get a Carte Orange hebdomadaire (weekly pass) which will donate you unlimited travel for a week (necessarily Monday morning to Sunday night) so it could be worth it if you arrive on a Monday or Tuesday. It's 16.30 /week for zones 1-2. Check the prices on the RATP website for other zone if you are staying in the suburb, but surrounded by any case, it's 6 to 10 euros cheaper than a Paris Visite Pass.
