Answers:
it is the way we break down the different areas of Canada.
Like the USA has states, we have provinces. 10 in total, and in the north & northwest we have 3 territories.
Provinces:
British Columbia
Alberta
Saskatchewan
Manitoba
Ontario
Quebec
Nova Scotia
New Brunswick
Prince Edward Island (known as PEI)
Newfoundland & Labrador
territories:
Yukon
North West Territories (known as NWT) and the newest (split from the NWT)
Nunevut
Canada is a vast difference of different beauty from coast to coast.
:-) I love that I am from here.
Other answers:
Provinces are similar to states in the fact that they break apart the geography of Canada in to smaller sections. We are not the only place in the world that has provinces either.

Provinces have their own legislatures (parliament) and governments with considerable autonomy in most important matters (Finance, Health, Transportation). Territorial affairs are largely adminstered by the federal government in Ottawa. The 3 Canadian territories (Yukon, NWT, Nunavut) may someday become provinces, but as yet their populations are low.
Aside from the thirteen founding colonies in the USA, most of the other states were officially territories prior to statehood.
