Are the danger of Rio de Janeiro exaggerated?

I am going to Rio for 7 days in a couple weeks next to a girlfriend and am wondering if the fact that we're 2 women will craft us much more susceptible to being robbed, etc. I am pretty guarded in broad and know not to wear any jewelry, fanny packs, or hold my camera around my neck but would resembling to know if I need to be at heightened alert or if I can deed as I would in any key US city.

Answers:    Its like any big city really. It have dangerous areas, The driving is worse than USA so mind on the roads.
I was surrounded by RJ for 4 weeks and I didn't see one crime!

Just don't look like a tourist including speaking loudly surrounded by English or in that funny performance of English Americans speak :P
I would recommend talking to some Brazilians where on earth your staying to get some local awareness
And if either of you are Blondie view out for the guys lol

I'm going to Rio again 19/01 :D
I will be safe I'm sure because I travel beside my Brazilian friends. I am English but am also part Spanish so I look Latino.

Enjoy your time surrounded by the beautiful city as will I
Definitely exaggerated.
yes ..

of late like the over exaggeration of the crime within New Orleans ..
top city in the US for crime .. lived here partly my life .. and never experienced any crime .. neither have my family .. why ? .. b/c its mostly gang related .. basically like RIO .. i've also never experienced any crime nearby.. (i'm 1/2 Brazilian) ..

But that doesn't mean you shouldn't mind of course.. I share anyone the same piece when visiting New Orleans or Rio .. or any foreign city for that concern .. dont walk alone .. dont totter where its not lit at dark .. dont look flashy .. dont swing your camera around for the public to see.. stick with the crowds .. know where on earth you are going etc etc .. other then mortal careful .. you will enjoy a f*cking blast !

boa sorte
no, they really arent. when you are out in the streets, try not to look similar to a tourist, dont leave valueable items out where on earth the crooks can see them. dont wear expensive jewelery or talk on the fone. when indoors, similar to at the mall, the danger subside and u CAN do all of the above
rio de janeiro is greatly dangerous, don't wander at nigth alone in the streat, try don't use your camera around your collar, put in some pack, to don't look resembling a tourist.

sorry my English , i am from brazil, and any doubts, ask me by email.
it alllllllllllll depends on where you dance.
and wat ever you do, dont tell them you live within america and make dollars.
No they are not exaggerated...I own relatives that live there and I spent 3 months nearby. Very dangerous. I don't be going to to ruin your trip but its very perilous...try to blend in and not look similar to a tourist because the crooks there will help yourself to advantage of that.
I live within the south of Brazil and I've never been to Rio.. but I know that everything ppl read aloud about Brazil around the world is exaggerated except for the beauty you'll find here...
I don't feel Rio is as perilous as they make it out to be. Maybe contained by Rocinha, but if you stay out of the favelas it's definitely not a hint different than Chicago, Miami, New York or L.A. The city is BEAUTIFUL, and for the most part the family are very nice and supportive. However I went next to family, and it did serve having men around when out clubbing at hours of darkness. However, I always travel in August, and it's getting so close to Carnaval that I'd assume more tourists and thus more deposit in the nouns. Be smart, don't leave your drinks around the railing. The JW Marriott is VERY nice, and has dutiful security if that would confer you added peace of mind. Their beach nouns is always a bit more comfortable, as you aren't under pressure as much by local vendors. Make sure you hold the RADIO taxis when traveling, and NEVER bring your passport beside you, leave it within the hotel. If you have any other question, please don't hesitate to email me. Have fun, it's a wonderful place!
be extremely, very alert when out - approaching maybe New York City. don't budge off next to strangers, drink too much or stray into strange areas.
Just be street wise and use your commom sense as if you be in Miami.
Ok, this is exactly what i thought to myself when i be going out to visit my Dad contained by Rio as he works there!

As the city is sooo substantial with millions of individuals living in it, it would be silly to enunciate that there arnt various dangers, because i'd be lying. Like any other city, youve other got to preserve your whits about you and keep hold of your eyes peeled at adjectives times.

The thing is, beside Rio, the whole policy system is totally currupt meaning more crime and stuff so yes Rio is contained by a critical state.

I dont want to put you off going to Rio because its by far the best place ive ever visit, but when i was out in that i got chitchat to alot of people who be telling me stories give or take a few how in times past, theyd been mugged, robbed, and held at gun point etc... which startled the sh*t out of me! I heard a certainty that on average 6 people surrounded by Rio are murdered each daylight. pretty scary stuff!

But give attention to about how plentiful people live contained by Rio and what are the chances of that up to you.pretty low i reckon! And this figure probably individual includes the dodgy crack dealers contained by the favellas (shanty towns) etc... which you wont be visiting - unless your stupid!

And as for your expensive items, its best not on hold them on show, especially in darkness times. I think woman are definatly more at risk, as for any other city really.

But motto all that, again freshly be aware of everyone around you, try not to actract attention towards yourself by walking around in a bikini adjectives the time or having the camera round your d¨Ścolletage! Please be safe, but most of adjectives when you do go, relish it! I can garentee it'll be the best time of your life and thats an honest belief!

Hope that hasnt put you off too much and hope thats set your mind at rest!

Mily x
