Advice/Experiences:
Everyone speaks some English but is resistant to do so at times - carry a travel guide with you that gives you some very basic German knowledge. When you ask to drink water, make sure you say Still/normal water, else you'll get bubbly.
when staying anywhere out of Vienna (e.g. Salzburg, Innsbruck, etc) make sure you stay in a Gasthof (not hotel - just go into yahoo! and search for "Gasthof in 'the city name'") as these are cleaner, friendlier, cheaper and a better experience!!
