do I need anything more than a passport to travel to Hong Kong from the US?

You may check this out:

I quote:

"U.S. citizens can enter Hong Kong for a period of up to three months without a visa, provided they have a passport that is valid for at least one month after the period of their intended stay in Hong Kong. Those who wish to stay longer must apply for a visa before traveling to Hong Kong, preferably at least six weeks in advance."

Nope, just show up with your passport. A visitor's (3 months for Americans) visa stamp will be issued upon arrival.
You need a visa. Hong Kong is apart of China now and is no longer apart of the British Commenwealth so you do need a visa.
You do not need a visa with a US passport for Hong Kong (I go all the time).

If you go to mainland China you need a visa. You get a mainland China visa at any Hong Kong travel agency where you buy your air ticket to China (you leave your passport with them for about a day and they process it - you need a few small pass-port style photos of yourself for the visa).

For complete details - check out Expressvisa.com - they will get you visas for any country you plan to visit and list all visa requirements for US citizens.
