What to take to Hong Kong?
I am moving to Hong Kong for 2 years to teach. I know that shopping is wonderful over there, but I'm curious what I should take from my home in Canada to make the transition comfortable.
Answers:
I presume that your school is responsible for your rent, if you may want to reconsider(unless they are paying you top dollars), since rent is very high. The weather is mild and humid, it is uncomfortable in the summer. You can buy clothes, expensive or cheap, lots of choices but provided that you have a small built. My friend is a size 14 in the States, and she finds it very difficult to get clothes in Hong Kong. Food is good and some of them are costly while you can still find local food appealing and cheap. There are specialty stores that sells imported food, which mainly are organic or gourment but the local supermarket chain stores are shelfed with imported stuffs(not that upscale). I do not think that you need to bring much from Canada, electronics goods are cheap in Hong Kong.(if you have a lap top, bring it so that you can talk/email to your family at home!) Anyway, it is just a big city, hope that you will enjoy it!

Money. Hong Kong is very very very expensive. Some shopping can be done on the cheap, but the rent you'll be paying will more than make up for that.

just a reminder: most restaurants & shops do not have heater during the cold months.
like in a cafe, you may have to keep your thick clothes & scarf on.
other than that, hk is a cosmopoolitan country.
Rent is the most expensive expense in HK, but your school must pay for that, right? So you don't have to worry about it. Transportation is pretty good in HK, I like their subway system. But there are lots of bus lines, I was confused when I was there.
If you are from Canada then you don't have to worry about cold either. There are not too many cold months and it's really not that cold comparing to Canada. But summer time it's very HOT!
Brand name items are little more expensive over there, but if you are not a brand name person then you will have no problem.
Food is great! Eat more!
Enjoy your two years in HK!
I use to be in the Navy so I know all about long stays away from home. Take pictures of the good times you had with friends. Bring your favorite music from home, if you have an i-pod, go nuts. Of course you should bring a Camera and when you get set up, make sure to have folks send you goods from home. It just feels good. I hope I helped.
i'm not familiar w/ canadian laws.but from the US.if you bring anything expensive out-of-country and bring it back in, it is best to have a certificate saying you own it.otherwise customs is gonna nail you for bring over your exemption amount.but like i said, i dont know if canada has this rule.
I am a 'HongKonganese'! Hong Kong has everything you need!
